“I want to continue working in broadcasting as I feel that I have finally found my vocation in life!”

A Million Pounds and a Thousand Students

In 2010 DBBC celebrated two milestones in its 11 year history.

First - it had trained over 1000 students, most achieving the top accreditation which is equivalent to a good GCSE or NVQ level 2.

Second - the amount the charity had raised to pay for the student training had now reached a million pounds. At no time had any student had to pay for any of their own training.

At moderation in August 2010, 79 students gained their Ascentis (formerly OCNW, Open College of the North-West) accreditation, with excellent comments on their work from the moderator.

In 2002 DBBC was recognised by being awarded two National Training Awards in a ceremony at the Guild Hall in London. Since then many other awards have followed.

Over the years, DBBC has also worked extensively in the local community. It has helped many Bolton community groups to put on 4-day radio broadcasts on several local estates. One of the first of these was at Washacre estate in Westhoughton. This was such a success that a 4-day broadcast has been put on for each of the following four years, thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of their local residents. DBBC has also helped other residents’ groups at Tonge Moor, Johnson Fold, East Bolton, Oldhams Estate and Hall ‘i’th’Wood to broadcast for 4 days.

DBBC used to help communities by providing roadshows for their local fundays or galas - as many as twenty used to be done during the summer months. Some of these have now been taken over by 96.5 Bolton FM, our local community radio station, although we still do several during the year. DBBC helps 96.5 Bolton FM by giving training and technical assistance, although both organizations are totally separate, DBBC being a registered charity, and 96.5 Bolton FM being a Community Interest Company. Despite this, there is much cooperation between the two and many students trained by DBBC do progress to become volunteers at 96.5 Bolton FM.
